Dissemination at Safisana Ghana Limited
On Monday, February 19, 2024, Development Impact West Africa (DIWA) facilitated a dissemination event at the premises of Safisana Ghana Ltd. The gathering involved the General Manager, other Line Managers, and Unit Heads of Safisana Ghana Ltd. The Principal Investigator on the project, Dr Opeyemi Amusan of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, was present at the event. Also in attendance were DIWA’s Research and Evaluations Manager, Richard Kingsford Otoo and Training and the Administrative Manager, Nissi Adu-Boakye.
The event provided opportunity for Dr Opeyemi to share the findings of his #DIWA-funded study entitled “Impact of Safisana Waste-to-Energy Plant in Ghana’s Urban Poor (Slum) Communities on Socioeconomic and Environmental Development”. The evaluation aimed to shed light on the effects of Safisana’s Waste-to-Energy Plant project on a densely populated settlement in Ashaiman, Ghana. Ashaiman, plagued by challenges in clean sanitation and waste management, suffers repercussions on economic growth and agricultural productivity. Safisana’s innovative approach, converting waste into renewable energy and organic fertilizer, holds promise for both environmental sustainability and community well-being.
Employing telephone interviews and online surveys, the study assessed Safisana’s impact on health, economy, social acceptance, and youth empowerment, shedding light on the significant benefits brought about by Safisana’s solution to the community. Additionally, the study formulated policy recommendations, which will be shared with relevant ministries for consideration.
Following Dr Opeyemi’s presentation, the General Manager of Safisana, Elikplim Asilevi, commended him for the study and provided insightful reflections on the findings. He proposed valuable suggestions for future actions. Other Line Managers shared their views on how the findings would guide their work and foster collaborative efforts moving forward.
